Detailed itinerary

DAY 1 - Arrival Day

Arrive at Catania airport and transfer to your hotel. Orientation briefing and welcome stroll and aperitivo! Dinner and overnight.

DAY 2 - Castelmola and Taormina

Visit the castle and walk from Castelmola, a small village just above Taormina with beautiful views onto the eastern part of Sicily, to Taormina. Lunch in town. Afternoon guided walk of the famous Ancient Theatre of Taormina. Remainder of the afternoon on your own and time to explore this famous town.

DAY 3 - North East Etna

Walk along the slopes of Mt. Etna near Mt. Sartorius with its 7 eruptive craters, along the volcanic path lined with birch trees and rare vegetation, passing several lava flows. Lunch en route. Afternoon continue walking in this unique environmental setting. Dinner at the hotel.

DAY 4 - Nebrodi Mountains

This is the largest forested area of Sicily. Walk through beech woods along the slope of Mt. Soro, crossing insignificant streams where the wild Sanfratellini breed of horses can be encountered. Continue on to Lake Biviere, a bird watchers paradise, cross the meadows of Basile and descend to Lake Maulazzo. An immersion into Sicily’s wild heart.

DAY 5 - Catania

Spend a day in Catania, the second biggest town in Sicily. The very centre around Piazza del Duomo is a triumph of Baroque, the town is lively and has a strong appeal. A city full of terrific street markets, there is no visit to Catania without the fish market, an experience on its own. The town is packed with cool bars and excellent restaurants. All the youthful and energetic atmosphere comes with historical sites of great interest. Catania is a must see.

DAY 6 - Northern Etna

Today’s walk demonstrates the violence Mt. Etna can show within a few days of eruption, walk across a lava field created after an eruption in 1981, then through the woods, lava fields and ascend the mountain in serpentines reaching the beech woods, continue on to a grotto with special volcanic rocks. A last full immersion in the nature Europe’s most active volcano.

DAY 7 - Buonopane

The gorgeous The Alcantara gorge, a canyon cut into the rocks, walk along the river, then to Castiglione di Sicilia, a medieval village, a stronghold of the Normans, as the Castle of the Lion tells, a Norman building of the 12th century set on a high crevice that dominates the surroundings. Farewell lunch with an abundant Sicilian meal.

DAY 8 - Departure

Transfer to Catania airport for departure.
